Skin Melanoma

Skin cancer and melanocytic lesions

Melanomas are malignant tumors capable of metastatizing. These tumors originate from the transformation and dysplastic proliferaton of melanocytes, a population of cells which normally reside in the basal stratum of the edipermis.

Primary skin melanoma can originate either on a pre-existent lesion or on a healthy skin area.

Skin cancer, although being one of the most malignant forms of tumors, can be detected  during its very early evolutive stages. The early surgical excision of this lesions would then result in a rapid recovery in almost 100% of cases.

Melanoma's incidence seems to be increasing in last decades, while its prognosis is fortunatly improving thanks to the fact that patients contact a specialist at an earlier stage and with smaller and thinner lesions.

Today, thanks to the clinical advancements made in the understanding of the origin of this tumor and in the diagnostic techniques, it is possibile to recognize this tumor directly from its potential precursors and to prevent the disastrous consequences of the metastatic disease.
